The kingdom of Orb stayed neutral throughout the war, however fell to the massive might of the Atlantic Federation (one of the Earth Alliance's member nations), Orb's remaining forces headed to space under the Lacus Clyne Faction in a last ditch effort to end a war that might destroy humanity."

"Now two years have passed since the end of the conflict, however, all is not well. Both ZAFT and EA are rebuilding their war machines in fears of another war. The story is about 2nd Lieutenant Shin Asuka, a Orb born Coordinator who lost his parents and younger sister 2 years ago in a battle between the Atlantic Federation and Orb. He later moved to the PLANTs, and joined ZAFT, and became ZAFT's newest Top Gun, and becomes the pilot of the Impulse Gundam. Orb has formed relations with the PLANTs, Cagalli has become Orb's new leader, superseding her late father, while former ZAFT Top Gun is her personal body gaurd and aide."

ZAFT had produced 5 new Gundam Mobile Suits in addition to its brand new Millinium Series Mobile Suits. However, just the night before the Minerva's commission, the Gundam's mothership, an Earth Alliance Commando Team captured 3 of the Gundams, while 1 was saved by ZAFT and 1 saved by Ex-ZAFT Top Gun Athrun Zala.

what is gundam? all i know is that it is a bunch of human contolled robots battling it out with each other.

Well actually Gundam is a constant story line between people who live in space and people who live on earth, who have a problem with one another. The giant robots were just a way to make cash in stores, i.e model kits, toys, etc. However, the giant robots are considered as military tools here, known as Mobile Suits.

In Gundam SEED, Mobile Suits were created to totally destroy an enemy when taking territory, and make sure they don't come back for a second shot. Mobile Suits are controlled by humans, in Gundam SEED, they mentioned Mobile Suits Operating systems are mostly software, and little human control.

A Gundam is basically a prototype of that Mobile Suit before production, besides testing, a Gundam is meant to collect combat data, and later on, serve as flag MS.

However, Gundam series are actually prized because of their character developments, and stuff. The famous Gundam SEED Love Triangle is one example. Each character has goals and issues, seperating them from being good or bad guys, most Gundam series don't have a good guy bad guy thing until the very end of the series.
