intresting to see no ones posted yet.

basant is one of the most celbrated and most eagerly awaited days of the year in Pakistan. this traditional celibration is mostly celebrated in punjab lahore the most and rawal pindi not bad either. i personally have nevver seen basant in lahore but in rawal pindi i have and believe you and me its hectic the atmosphere is full of joy and utter excitement. the streets are filled with litle children buying kites and string. there are many types of both kites and strings kites compe in all shapes and have al sorts of designs while there are hundreds of types of string. mostly designed to do most most damage on oponents string or have best defence against enemy string. you sort of batle the strings which are pulled from one end by you and other end by the kite and then whose ever kite breaks loose is a looser baby. (the trick is to let give some and when they pull hard there string breaks ;))

Participants and onlookers look up at Lahore's sky littered with hundreds of colorful kites during the kite flying festival, Basant, Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, in Lahore, Pakistan. Pakistanis celebrate Basant festival by flying different kinds of kites, wearing colorful dresses, dancing and preparing special dishes for visitors to welcome spring, while tight security on the ground guarded against threats from hard-liners who condemn the revelry as un-Islamic.

Man these threads stuck with bits and pieces of sharp glass can really cut anything that comes along it.....

However, it is a very very colorful event in Pakistan. Lahore seems to be most involved in this activity.
Yahya

Malik, its true that u can get cut,but i never really minded it.You can be smart and avoid SERIOUS cuts, tapping ur fingers every hour or getting special gloves is one way(although wearing gloves can hinder with ur control) but we all wanted to show off our cuts;)believe it or not.I never got seriously cut though,in my 7 major basants, everything heals in about a month(100%).Your fingers are pretty much functional after 3days to a week.

Like i said, the only problem i have is the firing, and the motorbike people. Those are the major sources of injury. Also the idiots u see on that thing they call roof.Ok it mite look courageous to them...and probably trying to impress some girls not int he picture, but iknow many people fall.thats 3rd source. But i still havent heard of people who fly kites getting seriously hurt coz of the threat.

Cheap people use metal wires and are a real nuisance, especially taking out the grid. Those idiots need to be punished as well.So all in all, most of the complaints 1% of the lahori population:P have against it, can easily be addressed but ppl are too lazy.
Aarshad
Only they should do something active against the metal wires.
Malikman
Thanks for the input guys.

I never participated in basant but i really enjoyed the festive mood.

My cousins in Lahore couldn't get enough of it, and yes they all show off their cuts to me!

They even bet on cars man! i thought that was whacked!

Getting them tangled in power lines is a big problem too. & also, people from Nishat Colony, & close by in Defence, fly their Kites above, right where the Landing Route for Airplanes heading to AI Intl. is. That also becomes a problem sometimes. Flying Kites in that area is actually banned, but people, especially from that undeveloped region of Nishat Colony fly them anyways.

What u see in the above pic where ppl r dancing on such a small roof is also very dangerous. As a matter of fact, a lot of deaths on Basant are caused by people falling off roofs.

we shld really put an end to basant.....its very dangrous in cities.....if there has to be some occasion like this....govt shld make it in a seperate area....

Nice Pics. Reminds me of the kite flying festival we have in south India in Mid January. Probably these are similar festivals, miss them big time, i used to get a lot of tan in that couple of weeks by staying in the sun almost all day with friends flying kites and shouting in loud speakers, eating sweets and firing the left over Diwali rockets at others kites and have my mom worried. Larka haat se gaya. laugh.gif

But it had just the similar problems with people getting injured.
Yahya

Its wonderful to see people be happy and celebrate ... but they should also give safety a high priority ...

safety + celebration = a wonderful experience ....

Ur kidding right?
The People will never stop celeberating Basant. Even if the gov't banned it, they would still celeberate it & fly kites.
Its not that hazardous. Its not like half the people who celeberate it, get injured or die. There are just a small number of casualties when compared to the total population which takes part in it.

Flying Kites is banned in many areas, even in Lahore. U can get arrested & charged if u r caught. But not on Basant

if the bullet is fired directly up its kool 45% makes the bullet travel at constant velocity untill it falls...(slowed a litle due to resistance though..
