Boeing Launches Long-Haul Passenger Jet
EVERETT, Wash. (Reuters) - Boeing Co. Unveiled a long-range version of its 777 commercial airliner on Tuesday, which the company said can fly from London to Sydney, making it the world's longest-range commercial aircraft.
With the launch of the new 777-200LR (long range) "Worldliner," Boeing is hoping to attract airlines that will ferry passengers directly between multiple points.
The new, 301-passenger, long-range 777 is expected to make its first flight in March and will be delivered first to Pakistan International airlines, its launch customer for the new version of the 777, in January of 2006.
The twin-engine airplane, when equipped with three optional fuel tanks, will be capable of flying 9,420 nautical miles, enough to "connect any two cities in the world today," said Lars Andersen, Boeing's vice president in charge of the 777 program at Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
"This is the longest-range airplane in the world," Andersen told a crowd of customers, suppliers, employees and reporters at Boeing's Everett plant north of Seattle, where the jumbo 747 and 767 planes are also built.
Even with a full-passenger payload in a typical three-class configuration, the 777-200LR will be able to connect cities as far-flung as Los Angeles and Johannesburg, London and Sydney, as well as New York and Jakarta, Boeing said.
There's a hitch, though. Although the plane can fly from London to Sydney, it will have to stop once to return via the same route to refuel, since it would be flying against high-altitude jet streams going back.
The 777-200LR will compete directly with Airbus's A340-600 and A340-500, but have seat-mile costs 15 percent to 18 percent lower than those models, Boeing said.
Boeing is also basing its 777 Freighter cargo plane on the 777-200LR that can carry 222,000 pounds (101 metric tons) of cargo.
The planes are powered by two General Electric GE90-115B engines, which the company said is the world's most powerful commercial jet engine, with 115,000 pounds of thrust.
Boeing is betting that airlines will be buying more mid-size jetliners in the same class as the 777 and its newest model, the 787, to ferry passengers between multiple cities, rather than gathering them at big airport hubs and carrying them on larger planes.
The 787, formerly called the 7E7, is also aimed at ferrying passengers from point to point at a much lower operating cost, and is expected to take to the skies in 2008.
Boeing's main rival Airbus (EADS.PA), which overtook the Chicago-based aerospace company last year as the world's largest commercial jet manufacturer, is betting that people will continue to travel through its major airport hubs, with its superjumbo A380 aircraft that can carry as many as 840 people.

Boeing has released photos of the new version of its 777. The model is called the Boeing 777-200LR, with LR standing for Longe Range.
Here is a photo of the first plane just before it gets a coat of paint, at Boeing's Everett, Washington, paint facility.
This plane will be delivered to PIA (Pakistan International Airlines):

It looks like a clone of Airbus 380, even the colours
Still though, nice looking plane
But engineering doesn't look as impressive as Airbus's...hard to tell though from a photo

Those arent any typical engines but none other than the GE90- 110B1's...the
second most POWERFUL jet engines ever(after the GE90-115B...which powers certain 777-300s).
Now you have something to say to the person next to you and impress them

.
IIRC, each engine has approx 110,000 lbs of thrust just about 5000 lbs less than the 115B (better check up on that!).

Boeing is going for the smaller... longer range planes... Airbus is going for the jumbo-jets... they are seperate markets now.
And for God's sakes... this is not a clone... please get a clue.

PIA bought Boeing 777s becuz of political pressure. Airbus A340s are out selling Boeing 777s. PIAs order for 7 boeing777s and single 777-200LR is the only recent big order for Boeing777.
PIAs engineering and technical teams preferred the Airbus but those making the decisions went for the american Boeing.
A340s maximum range is only around 790miles shorter than that of boein777-200LR. The 777LR can reach London to Sydney non stop but on the return journey it has to make one stop for refuelling - becuz of strong headwind it requires more fuel.
Boeing (and US media) is hyping this aircraft becuz they feel threatened by the choices offered by airbus. A380 is better choice than Boeing747 (jumbo). A340s and A330s in various configurations offer greater flexibility than Boeing777s.
For smaller aircraft and shorter range A320 and A318 are the most modern and upto date aircrafts. Boeing 737 and Boeing 727 are ancient by comparison.
The only country (apart from Pakistan) that almost always goes for Boeing products is Japan - but they have got good reason to becuz their companies manufacture important components for Boeing.
most other countries are going for airbus. Airbus has been out selling the boeing in recent times. It is nice to see that in at least commercial aircraft production that someone is not only matching but beating the aemricans.

It's not a clone on the inside, since I'm almost certain Airbus offers a much better interior....
But the outside definitely looks like a clone to me. Someone post pics of the A380 juxtaposed with Boeing's new aeroplane please
Cheers!!!!

gd it man....dont you know anything about planes....about boeing and airbus? They do not copy each other whatsoever. Each plane they make is unique.

Count the engines.
Count the number of floors.
Do some research on their dimensions.
Realise that the 777 was arguably the older concept (and hence running contrary to your previous statement that boeing copied airbus...if anything by your logic...it is hte other way around...but this is not true of course).
What do you want to make planes different? Deviate from the standard design of fuselage, wings and tail? All commercial planes flying today more or less share all these concepts...by your logic they are all copies of each other

I always thought it was complete garbage... I like the flag idea but the rest of it is uninspiring and not attractive at all. If they are going to spend billions on these planes, you would think they would spend some decent money on getting good liveries.

The new livery looks too plain for a plane. I think if it was like this Boeing one except Green & White, and the tail covered with nice designs, much better.

That's not the livery PIA will be using if you are reffering to the pics in this topic. The first plane hasn't even been delivered yet... PIA won't have it until January of next year. The livery hasn't been revealed yet.

To be honest, I agree with the general view that the livery of pakistani airlines has to change. I also like the top one the best. It looks proffesional and charming at the same time.
The current paint job looks very bland indeed.
(A flag on the tail...wtf....thats very cliche)
